Construction of Richmond Bridewell
Designed by Francis Johnston (architect of Dublin’s GPO) at a cost of £42,000 to relieve Newgate Prison. Bearing the motto “Cease to do evil; learn to do well”, locals dubbed it the ‘Cease to Do Evil Hotel’.
