Canada Study Permit Document Checklist

Comprehensive guide & mandatory document assessment for the IRCC Regular Stream.

Important Update

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) has been discontinued. All applications are now processed under the Regular Stream. The minimum living cost requirement is now CAD $20,635.

1. Pre-Lodgment Core Checklist (Mandatory)

Valid Passport

First and last page high-resolution copy. Previous passport copy (if available).

Letter of Acceptance (LOA)

Official admission offer letter from a Canadian DLI (Designated Learning Institution).

Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

New Requirement: Must be collected from DLI after receiving LOA (Exempt for Master’s/PhD programs).

Academic Qualifications

All official transcripts, mark sheets, and completion certificates (SSC/HSC, Bachelor, Master’s).

English Proficiency Proof

Valid IELTS Academic or PTE scorecard. Strong scores are crucial for the Regular Stream.

Letter of Explanation (LOE) / SOP

Detailed Statement of Purpose explaining study intent, future goals, financial matrix, and strong home ties.

Detailed CV & Work Experience

Updated CV, experience letters, pay-slips, and NOC (if applicable).

2. Personal History & Specific Circumstances

Previous Visa History

  • Documented travel/immigration history.
  • If previous visa refusal: Provide Visa Refusal Letter and proper justification in LOE.

Travelling with Spouse?

Only spouses of Master’s or PhD applicants are eligible for SOWP (Open Work Permit).
  • Marriage Certificate (Kabinnama & Notarized English translation).
  • Spouse’s Academic Transcripts, Passport Copy, CV, and Travel/Visa History.

Any Academic Study Gap?

  • Gap Proof Required: Job experience letter, salary certificate, tax returns, bank statements, or relevant short courses/certifications to justify the gap.

3. Financial Verification & Mandatory Sponsor Proofs

With all applications processing under the Regular Stream, source of funds is strictly verified.

Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)

While not legally mandatory, a GIC of CAD $20,635 is strongly recommended as the most solid proof of living costs.

Income Tax Returns

Sponsor’s last 2-3 years of e-TIN and Tax Acknowledgment receipts proving clear income sources.

Bank Statements & Transaction Clarity

Verified bank statements for the last 4-6 months. Any sudden large deposits must have valid justifications (e.g., land sale deed, matured DPS proof).

Affidavit of Financial Support

Proof of relationship (Birth Certificate/Family Tree) and a notarized declaration that the sponsor will cover all educational expenses.

Wealth Assessment Report Recommended

CA (Chartered Accountant) valuation report of total family assets (land, house, flat) to strongly prove “Home Ties”.

Your visa file must include a “Financial Matrix” covering these updated costs:

Primary Applicant Living Cost CAD $20,635
Spouse Living Cost (if applicable) CAD $4,055
Child Living Cost (1st child) CAD $4,055
Estimated Travel Cost (Per Person) CAD $2,000 – $3,000
Annual Tuition Cost As per LOA

The Total Required Funds must match your Liquid Funds (GIC + Bank Savings + Education Loan).
